The DICE Reading Program is a reading program that follows a Structured Literacy approach to reading instruction. Rooted in the Orton-Gillingham method our program is designed to systematically teach essential reading and writing skills to students, ensuring they develop strong foundational literacy skills for academic success. The DICE Reading program aims to provide explicit, sequential instruction in phonological awareness, phonics, decoding, encoding, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, and writing skills.

 

Key Components:

 

Phonemic Awareness:
  • Activities to develop skills in rhyming, segmenting, blending, and manipulating sounds.

  • Exercises focusing on phonemic awareness to build a strong foundation for reading and spelling.

 

Phonics:

  • Explicit teaching of letter-sound correspondences through structured lessons.

  • Systematic progression from basic to more complex phonics rules and patterns.

  • Application of phonics skills in decoding and encoding activities.

 

Syllabication:

  • Instruction in syllable types and syllable division rules.

  • Strategies for breaking words into syllables to aid in decoding and spelling.

  • Decoding and Encoding:

  • Systematic instruction in decoding strategies for accurate word recognition.

  • Spelling instruction emphasizing phonetic and structural principles.

  • Practice activities to reinforce decoding and encoding skills.

 

Vocabulary:

  • Explicit instruction in vocabulary words and meanings.

  • Strategies for determining word meanings from context.

  • Vocabulary-building activities integrated into reading and writing tasks.

 

Fluency:

  • Techniques for improving reading fluency through repeated reading and expression practice.

  • Focus on rate, accuracy, and prosody in oral reading.

 

Comprehension:

  • Instruction in comprehension strategies such as predicting, summarizing, questioning, and making connections.

 

Writing:

  • Instruction in handwriting, sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
     

Multisensory Approach:
